The Department of Economics (Pass Course) in Saint Mary's College started in the year 1937. Mother Mary St. Eusebius, Co-founder of the College headed the department with the help of Prof. H.K. Dhar as a part time teacher. Ms. Judith Kharshiing joined the Department in 1957.
Initially only Pass Course in Economics was offered in the College and the students admitted in the honours were required to attend classes in St. Edmund's College. Dr. (Ms.) A. Begum joined the Department in 1960 and under her leadership the Department in the College began the Honours course in Economics since then. Many qualified teachers have taught full time and part time in the Department and at present it has 4 full time teachers against sanctioned posts.

Economics is a subject which is opted for by an increasing number of students as it has many the prospects; some of which are:
