Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), New Delhi has proposed launching a National Initiative for Design Innovation Education in the twelfth Plan. Under this initiative, St.Mary’s College is one of the three SPOKES selected in the State HUB under North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 2017. The purpose of setting up Design Innovation Centre in this College is to facilitate and develop creativity among student community to develop innovative ideas and functional devices. St. Mary’s College Design Innovation Centre is conducting TWO one-year ADD-ON Diploma Courses for the students from any stream. These courses focus on the importance of traditional food practices with fortification and innovative designs in domestic waste management. These courses are multidisciplinary and aim towards production of cost effective food and effective management of domestic and kitchen wastes. It also helps towards serving valuable sources of information in the health care services and community education. The following Courses are sponsored by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), New Delhi.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSES:
- Sensitizing the student community in ethno resources of North East India with special reference to Meghalaya
- Developing skill based on innovative designs in baking from endemic plant parts
- Promoting community health through the development of innovative techniques in domestic waste management
- Facilitating the development of entrepreneurial skills of the student community
VISION:
The Vision of the Courses put an assortment of prominence on cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary education and imparts hands-on-experiences to its student community. The courses will be comprehensive skill education and training in design innovation paradigms. The Courses is to nurture and promote new and novel innovations through knowledge- based
activities. Create and Develop research avenues and services for the students and to the faculty. The courses encourage and serve the overall interests of its student community to grow and develop their creativity and innovations in the food processing industry.
AREAS OF FOCUS:
- Fortification of baking products through endemic plant species.
- Recycling bio-degradable domestic wastes.
- Recycling bio-degradable endemic plant species and manufacturing packing materials.
STRENGTHS:
- The courses are conceptual in nature which could give impetus to endemic plants, local food products and food product systems of the region in areas of advocacy and epistemology.
- Raw material for the courses is relatively cheap and/or limitless considering the nature of the courses being innovative.
- The courses are conceptual in nature which may provide entrepreneurial avenues for the student community.
- The courses are conceptual in nature enabling avenues in research and development.
